2017: A Year in Review
2016 was a horrible year. For many, it was Trump being elected, for others it was the seemingly high number of celebrity deaths. I remember ending that year hoping; thinking that this year will be better than the last. I was wrong. 2017 began by continuing the bad of 2016. Trump became the actual president. From there it has been so bad that the republicans are now regretting it! All but the diehards admitted to making a huge mistake.
I don’t even need to make this political! He admitted to sexual assault, lies directly to the public, and harasses people on Twitter. And now he is the leader of the free world, even though the majority of voters didn’t vote for him. That understandably pissed off a shit ton of people. Speaking of a powerful man admitting to sexual assault, Hollywood! Remember when Bill Cosby shocked America? Old news. Harvey Weinstein, Kevin Spacey, and Louis CK, all admitted to sexual assault. I’m an aspiring comedian. I saw him live! This hurts. There were so many more, but these three are the ones that I felt the most. Speaking of childhood heroes, Luke Skywalker died. I don’t care what you thought of the movie, Luke Skywalker died, man! (Also, RIP Admiral Ackbar!) Here are some more things that died: net neutrality, Star Wars video games, 21st Century Fox/20th Century Fox, YouTube being creator-friendly, anything Obama did, the European Union, and the Paris Climate Agreement. Again, you don’t have to have loved these things. Usually things fade away slowly. These things just died suddenly. There were, like 3 large-scale natural disasters in a row in/around the US. There were mass-shootings all over the globe, one a week at one point. The one in Las Vegas is the largest single-assailant massacre in America and no one mentioned it since!
58 confirmed kills is the new record, folks! Suck it, 2016 and your measly 49 kills at an Orlando Nightclub! 2017 was the year that corporations broke the consumers back: McDonalds screwed up their Rick & Morty Szechuan Sauce promotion. EA screwed up Star Wars Battlefront 2. Also, consumers and now lawmakers are no longer tolerating the proxy-gambling systems, gruesomely stapled to video games. And infecting them. (I’m positive there are more, but these two are important to me and I didn’t have to think too hard to remember they happened.) People are wising up to corporate greed, and though this is far from over, at least people are drawing the line in the sand. You thought this was over? Nah! Who can forget all the disappointing/horrible movies? (*Note: these aren’t necessarily my opinion, more of a larger audience consensus) Netflix’s Death Note, Justice League, Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Ghost in the Shell, The Mummy, The Dark Tower. All of these should have been unanimously amazing movies, but either flopped, caused a rift in the fanbase, or just plain sucked. Let’s reserve a special moment of hate for The Emoji Movie. I won’t say anymore than that. I don’t need to.
2017 was a shitty year. One of the worst. 1939 was pretty bad, too. And any year before the toilet was invented was literally shittier than this one. I’m gonna be honest, things aren’t looking like they’re getting better any time soon. I can’t say “Happy New Year” so, uh… all I can say is…hang in there!
And if you’re wondering where the post was where I talk about The Last Jedi, I still haven’t made up my mind yet, so stay tuned, because I got quite a bit to say.
